Attendance

Excusing an Absence

Whenever possible, families should notify the school on the day of an absence. Absences must be reported by a parent/guardian within two school days by phone or verified email.

Attendance line: 541-780-2132  Attendance Email: tina.nunez@slane.k12.or.us

After 3 or more consecutive days of absence, a doctor’s note is required to excuse the absence. Students with frequent illness-related absences (10 or more) may be asked to provide medical documentation and meet with school staff for support.

Excused vs. Unexcused Absences

Under the Oregon Law (ORS 339.065) a student’s absences may be excused by a parent or guardian for specific reasons, which are:

  • Personal illness or medical appointment
  • Family illness, requiring a student to be home
  • Emergencies

An absence is considered unexcused if it is not reported by a parent/guardian within two school days. After that time, absences may only be excused with administrative approval. A student who misses school or a class without permission is considered truant. Truancy may result in consequences such as detention, loss of off-campus privileges, ineligibility for athletics or activities (such as performances and dances)

Pre-Arranged Absences

Pre-arranged absence forms are available at the attendance desk for communicating planned absences with teachers, however these absences will be coded as unexcused parent permission (UPP), meaning that the school was notified, but the absence isn’t for one of the above excusable reasons.

Attendance Expectations

Being at school every day—and on time—matters. Regular attendance helps students stay on track academically, build strong habits, and stay connected to their school community.
