Cottage Grove High School is a part of the South Lane School District, which came into existence in July, 1961, as a result of the consolidation of the Union High School District and several elementary districts.
Founded in 1938, Cottage Grove High School was formed when seventeen smaller districts united, opening its original Taylor Avenue campus in April 1940. Over the next several decades, the facility underwent continuous expansions to accommodate its students, adding sports facilities, specialized wings, and multiple modular classrooms. The school also shifted its structure, operating as a three-year institution starting in 1963 before permanently reverting to a four-year high school format in 1990.

In the spring of 2000, voters approved a brand-new facility, leading to the opening of the current South River Road campus in September 2003. Today, the modern four-year high school serves roughly 850 students and features a state-of-the-art athletic complex. Demolition of the old Taylor Avenue building began in March 2004, though the vocational building was saved to house Kennedy Alternative High School while the remaining land was repurposed into soccer fields.
